Dear Readers,

in the following you can find the first outlook of the hop harvest 2018 which is expected to begin in the calender week 34/2018.

Germany + USA :

The area under cultivation in the two main growing areas USA and Germany has once again gained in size as compared to the previous year. Hops are grown in the USA on 23,204 ha and in Germany on 20,144 ha. This equates to a percentage of nearly 72% of the worldwide hop acreage.

A good average harvest is expected in both the USA and Germany if nothing serious happens in the coming weeks.

In both countries the focus is reverting more and more to the traditional hop varieties.

In Germany small gains in area increase for Perle, Saazer, Saphir and Spalter Select have been observed. All German flavour varieties apart from Ariana (+ 6 ha) have experienced a reduction in area.

In the case of high-alpha hops Herkules once again has gained more than 510 ha and with now 6,300 ha is the strongest variety in Germany. Almost every 3rdhectare is now Herkules.

In parallel here the development in the USA!

Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe have been reduced. Increase of Citra, Chinook and the high-alphas CTZ (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus).

pre-contract market 2018ff for harvests :

The pre-contract market quotes for the harvests of 2018 and 2019 are at a high level.

Popular noble aroma hops as well as less well-known hops will only be on the spot market 2018 should the harvest be above average.

A drop in the prices for Herkules will be experienced as from the harvest of 2021.
